Star Trek is a franchise that is long beloved in the hearts and minds of those who have grown up with it. Whether you grew up watching the Original Series (That's the Kirk and Spock series to those non-fans), The Next Generation (Picard) or even Deep Space Nine (Sisko), Voyager (Janeway) or Enterprise (Archer), you have an appreciation for this science fiction series created by Gene Roddenberry.
The newest addition to the Star Trek family is Discovery. In the Star Trek timeline, it is set roughly a decade before the events of The Original Series. But fans of the show can't expect a 1960s looking show with women with short dresses and brightly coloured sets. This is a show that doesn't have a Captain as the main protagonist.
Instead, we are following the adventure of the Starship Discovery through the eyes of its first officer, Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green). There's also outcry at why the Klingons don't look the same as they did in previous series'. As the show hasn't even aired yet, (it will be on CBS Access, which is online only) fans are only going off a trailer.
If you are new to the science fiction world, Star Trek could not be a better introduction, if you're new to Star Trek itself, I wholly implore you to buy all the series and binge watch them this Summer (preferably with pizza, Star Trek needs pizza!).
I think Discovery is going to be a wonderful addition to the Star Trek family. I am just glad to see Trek back in production. It's been 12 years since Enterprise ended so welcome back to Star Trek!
