Doctor Who - Peter Davison - The Fifth Doctor (1981 - 1984)

Peter Davison had the unenviable job of taking over from the wildly popular Tom Baker in the role of the Doctor. This, the fifth incarnation of the Doctor was younger than his previous incarnations, with the outfit of an Edwardian cricketer with a stick of celery pinned to the jacket.

Davison's outing as the Doctor is one of those which goes largely forgotten by those who aren't familiar with the classic series as his time as the Time Lord was relatively short. His tenure was noted for scaling back the horror stories from Tom Baker's era and getting away from silly humour with a more gritty tone (which is reflected in the death of his companion, Adric) In the 1983 20th Anniversary special 'The Five Doctors', Patrick Troughton advised Davison to move on from the role after three years to avoid being typecast, which Davison did, telling producers he would leave after three seasons in the role.

At the end of the Caves of Androzani, the Fifth Doctor regenerated into the Sixth, played by Colin Baker, when Peri asked what was happening, The Sixth Doctor replied "Change, my dear, and it seems not a moment too soon."
