Travelling Britain: Devon

The county of Devon within the UK.

Devon is a county in the Southwest of England. It is home to the Devon Cream Tea (Yes, there's several), Morris Dancing (Oh yes!), Custard and Agatha Christie. In fact, Agatha Christie was born the same town as me, Torquay.

Devon is famed for its rolling hills and lush pastures and sparkling seasides. Cities like Plymouth and Exeter are the most populated and Plymouth is an historic naval base with museum ships such as the Tudor Mary Rose museum which houses the hulk of the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 (That's before you and I were born!) and the HMS Victory, which was Lord Nelson's flagship at the battle of Trafalgar. Both are extremely fascinating as they are a huge part of Britain's naval history.

People who enjoy seaside resorts will find the area of Torbay (made up of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham) the best place for this on the south coast and then on the north coast, there's the seaside village of Ilfracombe. Both of these have wonderful beaches and all the traditional values of the British seaside which include Fish and Chips, Ice Cream and a jolly good time.

Devon and Cornwall are forever linked together as both of them are historic counties in Britain. Naval warfare, mining for copper and tin and the perfect agricultural climate for dairy farms make it a vital piece of the backbone of British farming.
