Chicken Tikka Masala, Rice and Garlic Naan. |
Indian cuisine has gained an international reputation for its fragrant and flavourful dishes. It's a mainly curry based cuisine and dishes range from the mild (Pasander, Korma) to the extremely spicy (Vindaloo, Madras) and be prepared to discard any of the stereotypes you may have heard about this food. Here are the five best Indian dishes.
1. Tikka Masala
This is the UK's other national dish. This dish was purportedly created in Glasgow in 1971 when a customer complained that the chicken tikka he was eating was too dry, so the chef made a 'gravy' out of tomatoes, cream and coriander. The dish was most certainly invented in Britain by a Bangladeshi chef.
2. Dal
Now, this is usually served on the side of dishes in Indian restaurants. It's a curry made of lentils and you can dip your Naan in it to make it a worthwhile starter or an accompaniment to the main course. It is delicious and a must have for first timers!
3. Biryani
A Biryani is a mixed rice dish that's extremely popular in Indian cuisine. You can have it with meat or fish but it's usually served with chicken and is a dish becoming increasingly popular in the United States.
4. Bombay Aloo
This is a dry dish, popular with potato lovers as it's boiled potatoes, cubed and then fried with spices to create a fantastic side dish to any meal or on its own as an appetizer.
5. Onion Bhajis
The Onion Bhaji is a hugely popular starter/appetizer dish in Indian restaurants in the UK. It's sliced onions, fried with flour, spices such as cumin and chili and usually served with a small side salad and a slice of lemon. It's rather mild in flavour and is the perfect start to your Indian food odyssey!
