What to Pack for a December Trip to New York City

Blog post author, Erica Williams, in New York City

If you're into Christmas, there is no more Christmasy place on earth than New York City.  But, if you've never been to New York City in December, and you're not from that part of the country, be prepared: New York City is absolutely freezing during winter!  This is not a drill.  You will need a warm coat and all the wintry things.  All of them.  But have no fear, we're here to guide you through the most important things you'll need to remember to bring.

1.  Heavy Woolen Winter Coat

The first thing you'll need to be sure to bring is a high-quality, heavy winter overcoat, like this Zeagoo Women's Fur Lapel, Double-breasted Wool Coat.  New York requires a lot of walking in order to properly see the sites, so you'll be outside a lot.  The most important thing you'll bring is a good coat.

2.  A Warm Pair of Winter Gloves

The next thing you should be sure to bring, is a warm pair of winter gloves like these OTIOTI Women's Touch Screen Gloves.  Make sure they're touch screen capable, because NYC is a very Instagram-worthy city.  You're definitely going to need your button-pushing fingers.

3.  A Winter Hat that Covers your Ears

Even if you're not really a hat person, once you're in New York in December, you're going to wish you were.  Just trust us and bring a hat, or if you're like me, bring one to match every outfit.  You will not want to be on the Statue of Liberty ferry without something to keep your ears warm.  Try one in a vintage style like this Women's Nine West Cloche Hat.

4.  A Fun Scarf

Another cold weather staple: a scarf.  Again, it's cold in New York in December.  You need items that will keep you warm while you're touring all the festive holiday department store windows.  This brightly colored Poseshe Blanket Scarf will keep you warm and stylish.

5.  Flat Walking Boots

You may be tempted to wear heels while you're in New York City, and of course you'll want to bring some stylish heels if you've got tickets to a show, or plans to have a fancy dinner somewhere, but for general touring, you will be doing a lot of walking, so it's best to bring a pair of flat walking boots like these Dream Pairs Faux Fur-Lined Knee High Boots.

6.  Tights

If you plan on packing skirts or dresses, you will definitely want to pack some warm tights to wear with them.  These Frenchic Fishnet Stockings will keep your legs warm, whilst maintaining that NYC style.

7.  A Crossbody Bag

A bag you can cross across your body and wear close to your body, or even under your coat, is a good idea at this time of year in New York, as there are lots and lots people in the city at this time of year.  This Travelon Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag is the perfect size to carry your id, credit cards, cash, and cell phone.

In addition to these essential items, you'll want to pack sweaters and pants, though you may also want to pack layers, as, though it's quite cold outside, the stores really crank up the heating during this time of year, so when you go indoors, you'll definitely be removing your coat, gloves, etc.  Also, an umbrella can sometimes be a good idea, as it can be pretty wet in New York during December, though, the moisture will sometimes come in the form of snow, rather than rain.  We always recommend purchasing tickets to shows and sites ahead of time when available, so be sure to bring those with you, if you have already bought them before you go.  If you do have Broadway tickets, you'll want to pack a sort of dressed-up outfit, though some people do wear casual clothes.  You're in NYC, you can be casual anywhere!  You can also purchase your MetroCard ahead of time, which we definitely recommend doing.  The subway is much more economical than taxis, and it'll get you everywhere you need to go.

If you have anymore questions about what to bring, or even where to go or what to do, while in New York City in December, please feel free to leave them in the comments section and we'll definitely help you out as much as possible.  Enjoy NYC during the holidays, it's the best place to be around Christmas time!
