Travelling Britain: Cornwall

Cornwall within England, highlighted in red.

Cornwall is a county in the southwest of England. It is home of the cream tea, the pasty (Pah-Stee), Ross Poldark and grumpy ex-surgeons with a blood phobia named Martin. Oh yeah, and Tintagel is rumoured to be King Arthur's birthplace. There's also the long association with the golden age of Piracy with the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera 'The Pirates of Penzance' fueling the stereotype of the traditional pirate.

Cornwall and its coastline are one of the most beautiful in the British Isles. With some saying the north coastline being much more beautiful than the south. The beaches in Cornwall can rival those in the Caribbean. Clear blue waters with white sandy beaches. Senen Cove in Penzance is a white sandy beach with crystal clear water, about a mile from Land's End. There's also safe bathing between flagged areas, No sharks or jellyfish!

Another great beach is Tresco, Isles of Scilly. The Scilly (Prounounced like "Silly") isles are 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall from Lands End. Strictly speaking, the isles are not actually in Cornwall but take a trip there and explore the beaches around there.

Cornwall is also perfect for walking trails. So many great walks such as the Lizard coastal walk or the Rinsey walk which takes in seascapes, landscapes and the Cornish mining heritage made famous in the Poldark books.

So many people think of Cornwall in Britain as being a wilderness and the famed Bodmin Moor with its beast that roams it wildly. Of course, the beast of Bodmin is a myth and no one should be afraid to venture around the moor.

So, this is the best place to begin your journey travelling Britain. Towns that are a must to visit in Cornwall are Truro, Newquay, St. Ives and Falmouth.
