Expat life can be tough. |
Expat life can be tough, especially for those who have never left their homeland before. Whether its finding fellow expats in our area, getting excited over finding the confection from home in a local grocery store, or simply watching TV from home, how do us expats cope with day to day life in the country we emigrated to? Here's how I cope...
Keeping Up With News From Home.
Keeping up the with news from back home (which in my case is the UK) always helps maintain ties with the homeland while you are living away. This is easily enough done thanks to the internet but it's important to not immerse yourself too much, enjoy the country you live in.
Try Not To Nitpick.
If you start nitpicking, you'll unravel the whole tapestry of why you wanted to move away in the first place. It doesn't matter if they do things better at home, this is how they do it in the country you're in now. Many fall into the trap of 'I don't like how things are here and want to move back home' simply because of one negative experience and miss out on a wonderful life experience.
Enjoy what your Country of Residence has to Offer.
For me, living in the United States of America is great. This is a vast country and I happen to live in one of the biggest states, Texas and waking up in this great state every day gives me a new appreciation for life. I'm glad I moved here. Honestly, who doesn't love free drink refills?
Be Confident in Making Friends
If you are worried about not having anything in common with people in the country you reside in, that's why you need to get to know people. For me, I've made plenty of friends here who have accepted me for my differences and embraced me for them too as they will you.
There's different kinds of expats, Many can assimilate and blend in while others have trouble finding their feet and feel the pull of going home a lot. Are YOU an expat? Tell us your experiences in the comments below.
