So, you're going to London this Summer (lucky you), but you've never been? Or perhaps, just never been at this time of year? Well, I've got news for you, Summer in London, is not like Summer in most parts of the states, despite the claims by Brits on social media about how hot it is and how much they're melting. It's not that they're lying to us Americans, it's just that what they find hot, isn't really that hot to most of us, especially those of us from the Southern parts of the U.S. The weather is actually gorgeous, with a little atmospheric rain and fog mixed in. Hey, it wouldn't be London otherwise. So, what should you pack? Well, we're here to help!
1. Rain Boots
Yes, rain boots will come in handy. But, while a black pair would probably match most of your outfits, why not opt for color? It is Summer after all.
This pair of The SAK Women's Rythmn Rain Boots in Teal is the perfect mix of color and pattern and has that "Swingin' London" vibe about them.
Or maybe a shorter pair that look less rain boot and more Beatle Boot and will go with all your super cool London looks? This pair of Sam Edelman Tinsley Rain Boots have a matte finish and hardly look like rain boots at all.
And, for men, you can't go wrong with these Joules Buckingham Rain Boots. With a name like Buckingham, these were made to be worn in Britain. And they're comfortable walking shoes as well.
2. Compact Travel Umbrella
While this one seems like a no brainer, given our number one item to pack, you'd be shocked at the number of people who visit London without an umbrella. Easiest way to spot a tourist is the person caught in the rain without an umbrella.
While, your options are really endless, it's important to invest in a good one like this Tiagogear Auto Open One Handed Windproof Travel Umbrella. It can be very windy in the UK. You don't want an umbrella that will turn inside out on first use!
3. Sunglasses
Don't be fooled. While it does rain almost everyday in Britain, it's usually just for a little while. Eventually, you're going to need sunglasses, particularly if you go do any outdoor sightseeing like the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Hyde Park. Or, if you venture off to Leeds Castle or Stonehenge.
I love these Injected Unisex Round Sunglasses with a Blue Mirrored Frame by Ray Ban. You can never really go wrong with Ray Ban sunglasses.
Or, if you're slightly more traditional, these Justin Black Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses with a rubber frame are durable and will absolutely never go out of style.
4. Tote Bag
Personally, I believe in foregoing the purse when traveling. Instead, I find a tote bag much more handy for carrying things like my umbrella, phone, passport, money, and any souvenirs I purchase along the way. It's important to find a bag that fits right under your arm so pick-pockets can't easily reach in and remove your wallet, etc.
This Scout Uptown Girl Tote Bag is perfect because of its dark color and multiple pockets. The dark color will show less dirt and the pockets are great for keeping you organized while out sightseeing.
5. Fanny Pack
They're baaaaaack. If you don't like the idea of carrying something bulky and heavy around all day, maybe a fanny pack is more for you (just don't call it that in London). People are loving the hands-free-ness. Stick your phone, your money, and your passport in and you're good to go.
This Reflective and Water Resistant Werocker Fanny Pack is not your Momma's fanny pack. It's sleek and sophisticated and even slightly futuristic with it's hologram look.
6. U.K. Travel Adapter/Voltage Converter
Depending on what you're taking with you to London, you may or may not need a travel adapter, as wattage in the United Kingdom is different than America and you will not be able to plug in your appliances or laptop, or phone, etc.
The LiteFuze 200W Voltage Converter and Power Adapter is compact in size and comes with three different plugs for different parts of the world. It allows you to convert other countries' voltage to US voltage, which enables you to safely use your devices and small appliances overseas.
7. London Pocket Map
I know, I know. You have a smartphone. But, if you don't have the most expensive plan which allows international roaming, or if you don't want to pay those exorbitant fees, a pocket map really comes in handy when looking for particular points of interest.
This London Popout Map is super cute and convenient, and it got me all around the city my first trip abroad.
8. Oyster Card
Depending on the length of time you'll be staying in London, you may want to purchase an Oyster Card, which is a prepaid card you'll use to travel on the London Underground (subway). It's a good idea to purchase it online so you already have it with you when you arrive and don't have to stand around trying to figure out how to purchase one after you arrive.
The Oyster Card can be purchased online and can be used on the London Underground or the Overground (buses). You can put as much money on the card as you want and top it up as needed.
In addition to the items above, you may want to pack a light rain jacket. You will probably want some comfortable shoes, as you will do lots of walking. You'll also want to pack layers so you won't be too hot during the day, but won't be chilled in the evenings or early mornings. The temperature is usually in the mid-50s in the mornings and mid-70s during the day. Be sure to change your cash over before you go. If you do it at your bank branch, you'll pay a smaller fee than at a currency exchange kiosk. You may want to pre-purchase your tickets for any popular attractions you may be going to, as lines can be very long during the Summer months when tourist season is high. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments section below and I will do my best to help you in any way I can. Have a great trip!
