Travelling Britain: Merseyside

Liverpool at night, as seen from across the Mersey River.

The English county of Merseyside is known throughout the world for one thing: Music. Before the 1960s Mersey Beat boom, Liverpool was a port town and would have ships that called there from all over the world but Merseyside is so much more than just the sprawling city of Liverpool...

Merseyside is in the north west of England and borders the counties of Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire, the county of Merseyside was only created in 1974 and before this, Liverpool and the surrounding areas were part of Lancashire and Cheshire.

Liverpool itself is a beautiful city, full of the vibrancy and charm that molds its people and produced some of the greatest music of the 20th century but if you take that ferry across the Mersey (or a car or train these days), you'll venture into the Wirral, which has some stunning countryside.

The little village of Thurstaston is quite charming, with it's beach and expansive areas of heathland and parkland making it perfect for rambling and dog walking.

There are several pretty villages around the Wirral, being as it's very close to North Wales, it shares the picturesque scenery of the area with the greenery and the wonderfully quaint little walkways and bridges.
