Broken Sword: The Shadow Of The Templars

George meets Nicole Collard at the start of the game.

The Broken Sword series is Europe's most successful adventure game series. Released by Revolution in 1996 for the PC, the first game 'The Shadow of the Templars' became a huge hit for its engaging story and characters. The character you play mostly is George Stobbart, an American tourist on holiday in Paris when the cafe he is frequenting is blown up by a bomb, killing an old man. Wanting to get to the bottom of this, Stobbart (wonderfully voiced by Rolf Saxon) begins his own investigation and uncovers much more than a random terrorist attack which plunges him deep into the mythos of the Knights Templar.

The game's characters are really what makes this come alive though. Nicole Collard, the Parisian journalist who George befriends at the start of the game is charming and kick ass and you are rooting for George to end up with her and not go with Andre Lobineau, the Parisian Museum Curator who lusts after Nicole but she isn't interested. There are some minor characters that are so wonderfully acted that they stick in your memory, like the Road Worker, Lady Piermont and

And then there's the killer that George is chasing throughout the game; Khan. Probably one of the greatest villains in a computer game, Khan eludes George for most of the game until they catch up in Syria.

The game plays out much like an action adventure movie in the best way possible. The Director's Cut they released recently features more on Nico's backstory and gives that extra dimension to the beloved game. If you're a fan of the action adventure game genre and like a good puzzle, Broken Sword is for you. Pick up a copy today and then have a look at the whole series.
