Sound Like God - The Eric Clapton Fender Stratocaster

Slowhand's Choice: Clapton has used Strats almost exclusively since the early 1970s

Eric Clapton is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in the history of popular music, from his early days with blues band the Yardbirds, through to major success with Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes, Eric became a global superstar thanks to his music, his love of the guitar and his interesting experiences, especially with Patti Boyd, who was then married to George Harrison. You can read all about Eric's life in his autobiography.

But, you want to sound like Clapton? Sound like the man who had 'Clapton Is God' scrawled on a tube station wall in 1966? Well, you need an Eric Clapton Fender Stratocaster.

Early in his career, Clapton played Gibson guitars, a Les Paul and the now famous psychedelic SG that he used during his days with Cream. Once Clapton got a Fender Stratocaster in his hands, however, he had found his guitar.

It's not hard to see why Eric favours this guitar so much. It's lightweight and, with the back problems Eric has been having recently, this is perfect for a 2 hour live concert.

There's also the versatility of the Fender Stratocaster, it has three single coil pick ups, the neck, middle and bridge which give a variety of tones and play styles. For example, the 5 way selector switch allows you to blend tones which give the Strat that unmistakable tone and reason why its beloved the world over by guitar players.

Of course, if you haven't got the dosh for a full on Fender Stratocaster, then Fender do a series of excellent cheaper versions by Squier that is perfect for the guitar player on a budget. Clapton has spoke of preferring a maple fretboard to the more common rosewood as he loves to bend the strings and on a maple fretboard, it's much easier to do just that.

So, go ahead and pick up one of these beauties today, you know you won't regret it, whether its your first time buying a guitar or you're adding to your collection. It just makes sense!
