Beatles Find: Beat Bugs

Jay is the mischievous beetle in the Beat Bugs

The Beat Bugs are the creation of Josh Wakely, who heard 'All You Need Is Love' on the radio one day and thought up the concept of these little garden bugs learning life lessons with the backdrop of Beatles songs. A perfect idea for a children's television show!

The Emmy award-winning show premiered on Netflix in August 2016 and became a huge hit with children all around the world, further proof that the Beatles music is absolutely timeless.  The main characters include: Jay, a curious beetle; Crick, a cricket who is an inventor; Walter Walrus, a slug with a big heart; Buzz, an optimistic fruit fly; and Kumi, a protective and naturally confident ladybug with a zest for life, which makes her the natural leader of the group.  Other characters include Lucy the dragonfly, an alternative sleep doctor, and Baz, the mud wasp.

Some have criticized the show for over-simplifying the Beatles music, but what better way to get toddlers into the greatest band of the 20th century (and possibly of all centuries)?  The stories are short and sweet and to the point and each episode is inspired by a Beatles classic, sometimes interpreted by one of today's hottest pop artists like Sia, The Shins, Eddie Vedder, Robbie Williams and others.  Kids can learn important life lessons based, however loosely, on the music of the band that is sure to become one of their favorites.  If there's a problem somewhere therein, I'm failing to see it.

Children can join in the fun of the show with a special line of Beat Bugs toys, only sold in Target stores.  There are action figures for kids to use to play pretend, and plushies for them to cuddle with at night.  In addition to toys, there are t-shirts, CDs, and bedroom decor.  If there are no Targets near you, you can find some items like the Beat Bugs Musical Submarine Action Figure Vehicle and the Beat Bugs (I Can Read) books on Amazon, or you can try this eBay store which will be stocking many of 2017's hottest toys for Christmas.
