Travelling Britain: London

The River Thames and Tower Bridge are icons of London
London. It's a big city, one of the largest in the world. It's also one of the most famous cities, with a whopping 9 million people living in and around the capital. Settled as Londinium by the Romans in 43AD, London today is one of the most visited cities in the world.

Traveling around the capital is rather easy, there is an extensive underground train network that is as iconic as the city itself and, of course, the red double Decker buses and the black cabs.

The Tube is a vital instrument in traveling around the capital.

London, like any other western city, is full of external influences while still remaining inherently British. Many have come from all over the world to settle down in London and make it their home, the large immigration figures started in the 1950s when the call was put out for workers from the British commonwealth nations to come and work in London.

London today is multi-cultural and as such, a lot of the stereotypes about it that may have once had some truth in them, don't anymore. The major tourist hot spots are, of course, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben with Buckingham Palace and the Royal Parks being high on the list of go to places too.

The Tower houses some impressive armour from past Kings such as Henry VIII

If you are into royal history, the Tower of London won't fail to impress, with the crown jewels on display and some of the greatest collection of royal armour from past monarchs.

When you're hungry after all the sightseeing, you can't beat a trip to the chicken restaurant chain that has taken Britain by storm; Nando's. If you like your chicken hot, then Nando's is happy to cater for you. (There's other things on the menu too, like the Mushroom and Halloumi Burger!)

London is one of those cities that you can never just see in a day, or even a week. You need to spend at least two weeks there to really get your fill of the capital and immerse yourself in the culture.
